$8.2B Senate-approved Education Trust Fund budget largest in state history

The Alabama Senate on Thursday passed an $8.26 billion Education Trust Fund (ETF) budget, which represents the largest in state history. Budget sponsor State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur), chair of the Senate Finance and Taxation Education Committee, detailed the increased investments provided in the historic ETF budget. “I am proud to support this record setting education budget which will make an unprecedented investment in Alabama’s children while funding historic raises to keep great teachers in our classrooms,” said Reed. “The hard work and conservative budget practices by my colleagues in recent years have made this incredible day possible. The Alabama Senate and the entire legislature will not stop working to support Alabama’s students, teachers, and families.”The ETF budget now heads to the Alabama House of Representatives for consideration.

House passes Higher Education Investment Trust Fund bill

Juneau, Alaska (KSRM) - The Alaska House of Representatives passed a bill that moves to protect Alaska’s higher education funding from the annual political battle to "sweep" the fund. House Bill 229 clarifies that the Higher Education Investment Fund, which finances merit-based Alaska Performance Scholarships, the needs-based Alaska Education Grant, and the WWAMI medical program on its annual earnings, is not subject to the annual sweep of funds into the Constitutional Budget Reserve. Rep. Andy Josephson (D-Anchorage) said, “This bill would take the Higher Education Investment Fund and also the Performance Scholarships and Education Grants and it would put them in a statutory place where they couldn’t be swept into the Constitutional Budget Reserve. This happens by creating these funds as separate funds, outside the general fund and also housing them in the Alaska Student Loan Corporation following a model that we borrowed from. If signed into law, HB 229 aims to protect those programs by moving the HEIF into the Alaska Student Loan Corporation, which would prevent it from being negotiated upon.

Manistee's Postma receives Michigan Education Association scholarship

SCOTTVILLE — When Manistee High School teacher Amanda Clemons nominated senior Solana Postma to be a Michigan Education Association Region 13-B Academic All-Star, she opted to emphasize Postma's accomplishments outside of the classroom. Manistee County students honored were Postma; Keera Groenwald, of Bear Lake High School; Gavin Rudlaff, of Brethren High School; and Ellery McIsaac, of Onekama High School. Rounding out the award winners were Mason Cantu, of Hart High School; Abigail Bandstra, of Ludington High School; Nicole Bowen, of Mason County Central High School; Eli Shoup, of Mason County Eastern High School; Mikaylyn Kenney, of Pentwater High School; and Lilian Fessenden, of Walkerville High School. "I'm so grateful to my teacher, Ms. Amanda Clemons, for nominating me for this scholarship," Postma said in an email. "It is thanks to her and the community of teachers at Manistee High School that I have received this honor."

Applications for the Doug and Ella Stonier Education Trust Scholarship available through June 4

Doug Stonier and Ella Stonier Educational Trust will award scholarships to college students for the 2022-23 school year. To be eligible, students must have resided in Granville, Hennepin or Magnolia in Putnam County for a period of three years prior to the award of the scholarship. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of educational capability and financial need to students working toward a bachelor’s degree who are entering their third or fourth year of college. Applications for a scholarship may be picked up at the Granville National Bank in Granville. Completed applications will be accepted no later than June 4.

The Mattapoisett Land Trust is seeking applicants for their $1,000 Blanche B. Perry Scholarship. Applicants will be assessed according to academic achievement, personal statement, professional and personal references, community service, and financial need. Preference will be given to individuals who are members, or whose parents or grandparents are members, of the Mattapoisett Land Trust.
