A local high school student is making history in Fort McMurray.
Nabihah Hussaini, a 17-year-old at Composite High School, is the first student in Composite’s 46-year existence to secure the Schulich Leader Scholarship for $80,000 to the University of Calgary.
“Being recognized as a recipient for the Schulich Leader Scholarship opens up a multitude of opportunities for me as I begin my undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary. It’s a magnificent honour and privilege to be offered a place within the deep network of Schulich Leaders and I’m especially grateful for the copious amounts of support I’ve received from family, friends, and community members,” noted Nabihah.
“Being notified that I was chosen as one of the 100 Schulich Leaders in Canada was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life. It will forever inspire me to work earnestly towards the positive change and development I hope to see in the near future. I look forward to entering the field of Computer Science this fall while at the same time recognizing the level of responsibility and dedication I must exhibit in order to truly benefit from this amazing opportunity.”
Nabihah serves as Composite’s Student Council’s Public Relations Officer and is responsible for promoting school events and activities through the group’s social media platforms.
In the community, she is an active volunteer with Markaz ul Islam, a youth mentor for Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta, and a peer leader with the Settlement Workers in Schools Program.
Dan Tulk, Principal at Composite High School says he is so proud of Nabihah’s accomplishments.
“Nabihah is an amazing student who excels academically. This momentous scholarship demonstrates the great things our students do at Fort McMurray Composite High School. We strive for a strong academic core surrounded by a family environment and this can be seen so prevalently in Nabihah,” added Tulk.
“As a strong academic student, member of student council and the multicultural association, as well as an active community volunteer, Nabihah exemplifies Miner Pride and the spirit of Fort McMurray Composite High School,” Tulk added.
Nabihah is the third student in Fort McMurray this year to be offered the Schulich Leader Scholarship, joining Manorama Joshi from Westwood and Rion Schulz from École McTavish.
