May 26, 2022Four Susquehanna University students were awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, enabling them to study in England, Germany and Italy. Noah Trala ’24, a sports media major from Mechanicsville, Pennsylvania, will study at the University of Stirling, Scotland. Gilman scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs. More than 40 Susquehanna students have been awarded the scholarship since 2015. The university has a dedicated program in place to identify and mentor students throughout the application process for Gilman and other prestigious scholarships.
Mr. Weintraub and his wife, Marilyn, were married for more than 60 years. The family billed the pet superstore as the largest in the United States, and Mr. Weintraub, affable and quick-witted, was its public face. Interested and effective in all aspects of the operation, Mr. Weintraub helped design the stores, build inventory, set prices, create promotions, and mentor the staff until the business closed in 1992. Mr. Weintraub met New Yorker Marilyn Levine at a resort in the Pocono Mountains. Born Dec. 29, 1935, Mr. Weintraub grew up in Mount Airy and earned a bachelor’s degree in business and finance at Temple in 1957.
After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Grizzly Scholarship and Hall of Fame induction dinner and ceremony is set to take place at The Grove House in historic downtown Mariposa on Saturday, June 25. Standout Mariposa County High School multi-sport athlete and former National Football League player Cody Wichmann will be inducted into the hall of fame. MCHS student athletes Lupin Amstutz and Andres Ibarra will receive this year’s scholarships. The dinner and induction ceremony is a way to earn money for the scholarships while honoring one male and female senior student each year. The Grizzly Hall of Fame induction ceremony honors former Grizzly athletes, coaches, contributors and teams.
A local high school student is making history in Fort McMurray. Nabihah Hussaini, a 17-year-old at Composite High School, is the first student in Composite’s 46-year existence to secure the Schulich Leader Scholarship for $80,000 to the University of Calgary. Dan Tulk, Principal at Composite High School says he is so proud of Nabihah’s accomplishments. This momentous scholarship demonstrates the great things our students do at Fort McMurray Composite High School. Nabihah is the third student in Fort McMurray this year to be offered the Schulich Leader Scholarship, joining Manorama Joshi from Westwood and Rion Schulz from École McTavish.
Soroptomist International of Vallejo (SIOV) announced this week that they have distributed $47,000 in the last two months to women and girls who seek to continue their education. On March 26 at an event held at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, SIOV granted a total of $10,000 to four women for this year’s Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women, and the Violet Richardson Award. This years’ awardees will be continuing on to Solano Community College, Napa Valley College, San Francisco State University, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Davis, UC San Diego, Dartmouth, UCLA and Clark University Atlanta. Soroptimist is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. The Vallejo Soroptimists join 1,300 soroptimist clubs in 21 countries and territories around the world in actively supporting this mission.

MARTIN, Tenn. — A new scholarship has been established at the University of Tennessee at Martin. First Choice Farm and Lawn of Union City and Kubota Tractor Corporation have created the Nick Smith Agriculture Scholarship Endowment, according to a news release. The release says the scholarship was named for Nicholas “Nick” Doyle Smith, of Golo, Kentucky, who died in April of 2022. The scholarship is meant to thank Smith and his family for their contributions to First Choice, as well as to help UT Martin students, much like Smith had done. “Nick’s work ethic, his love for family, and the opportunities that he provided to others in ourindustry have been an inspiration to many, including myself.”You can learn more or make a contribution to fund by calling Jeanna Swafford, the associate vice chancellor for UT Martin Development, at 731-881-7629.

(AP Photo/Michael Conroy File) (Michael Conroy / AP)Northwest Indiana transgender and women’s rights advocates expressed their disappointment with the legislature’s vote to override a veto of a bill that would ban transgender girls from playing on a girls sport or team in K-12 schools. On Tuesday, the House voted 67-28 to override the veto, with three Republicans voting against the override. The Senate voted 32-15 to override the veto. “No child should ever have to go through what the legislature declared was acceptable behavior against trans girls,” according to the statement.

Now a Gator basketball staffer Korey McCray, the initial and lead recruiter for MSU regarding Kugel, was on the case of getting him back. Aberdeen, a 6-foot-4 175-pound combo guard who committed back in November, will mesh well with Kugel. In the way of transfers, the Gators have four new players on their way to becoming gators.
